"Don't worry, they'll be given another opportunity to correct this. And another. And another. As may times as it takes to get the result the elites want."

This is somewhat similar to the ratification of constitutional amendments in the U.S. The Equal Rights amendment was voted on many times by different states - over almost a decade, until some began to withdraw ratification and chaos ensued. Time was extended by act of congress, but that time expired too.

Some of it was for the wrong reasons, but not all. Alot of it was wanting to maintain France's independence.

But mostly it was because the EU Constitution wasn't socialist enough.

Stop with the Communism comparisons already!

Like I wrote: What sadly many Americans don't get - being that most are under educated on foreign events and get most of their news from sub par sources such as talk radio personalities - is that the EU is no going towards "Socialism" per say. In fact the French are voting 'NON' for the most part because the EU will end govt subsidies. The EU forces divestment of govt owned and supported business for the most part. What the EU does represent that does strike Americans as "Socialist" is examples of homogenization and standardization by (what I call) Eurocrats.

What the EU is striving for is a heavily regulated free market eurocracy and not really classical Marxist-Socialisim - not even the Swedish model.

The irony is that France would have been more market oriented under this EU constitution (even with the uber regulations) than she is now. I am sure that irony is lost on many here.

PS: There is the side of the 'NON' vote from those that don't want to be part of an EU with Turkey in it but that us a smaller segment than those French who don't want to lose their subsidized way of life as they would have under the EU constitution.

The US still rules the world? What kind of traitor are you to this republic that prays for American empire over America republic? America is (or should be) a leading light of example to the world not its overlord.

A currency without a country?

Exactly the question, isn't it? And without a doubt it was a question on the minds of those who pushed for the Euro. They knew what an essential attribute of sovereignty it was, which is exactly why they pushed for it.

Sure, I'd like it if they were to do away with the currency rather than create a new country, but it's clear that the currency was put in there so that it would lead to a new country. That's because both main political parties in each country (socialists and "conservatives", by whatever specific names they're known) have wanted it for a long time. They're not going to give it up very easily. It's very difficult to break the stronghold that two nominally opposing parties can have on a country, especially when they're committed to centralizing power further. It's going to take a lot of effort to undo it.

You are correct. The EU capitalism is based on the concept that a government can regulate and tax an ecconomy into prosperity.

It is based on onerous redistribution through taxation can offer 100% employment. There has always been buzz on a european "vision" of capitalism.

I think the function of the constitution was to allow for more eurocrat regulation formation without the obstruction of a on member "veto" as is now the case.

America is not that far off from what the EU is striving for - but thank God we stopped short and did not keep going as the Euros did. Under Noxon we even had price controls! Reagan saved this economy from regulation strangulation.

Um, by the world taking after our way of life our empire grows. If you don't get that then you have a lot to learn despite your elitist attitude about people on here.

Yes, the commies were against the thing because it wasn't communist enough, but the Constitution had problems going way beyond that. How bad is an idea when it gets both the Left and the Right together?

Bush, Blair, and Howard all reelected Schroeder is going down painfully and Chirac is now humiliated and defeated.

I was thinking the same thing. There sure seems to be a clear winners column and a losers one !!!!

A note. In his ancestral Hungarian, Sarkozy is pronounce SHAR-kohz-ee. It's the name of a very famous mathematician and his slightly less famous son.

I think we ought to start calling him "The Shark" or "Le Requin".

But it is still no a country and now would seem to be moving even furhter away from it. what you are saying was not a secret, it is all in Delors's "plan." But the Euorcrats are off in their abstraction. At some point they will have to ditch it becuase they will not become a nation. It is a gamble that Brussels made and lost. Time will tell.
