Well, on dry land at Waterloo Napoleonic Old Guard was offered opportunity to surrender, but declined it and went down together with their exalted self-esteem, so we do have an example of that mentality. But it happened 190 years ago. Besides, it was on dry land, not on water.

well and that was Napoleon too....they probably had a certain pride with them, something seemingly sorely lacking in France ever since...
