You really should read Szasz before you criticise him. Yours and your familiy's cases doen't prove that the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia is valid, it just proves that your coping strategies (or lack of them) are shared genetically
"Paranoid schizophrenia" is no more invalid as a description of a condition of certain neural disorders (however ill understood -- and really, all the stuff we hear about "serotonin balance" etc. is about as precise as the medieval medical model of "bodily humors") than "sore throat" is invalid as a description of a condition of a throat infection. In both cases, medicines can assist in restoring normalcy, though certainly good hygeine is helpful in preventing a relapse.
