WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Poland's jobless rate fell to 18.8 percent in April, from 19.3 percent the previous month, according to government data released Wednesday. The Central Statistical Office said the April figure compared with a jobless rate of 19.9 percent in the same month last year.

In total, some 2.96 million people were out of work in April in the nation of 38 million, one of 10 mostly ex-communist countries that joined the European Union in May last year.

Despite healthy economic growth, Poland has the highest jobless rate in the 25-member bloc.

They should be. Most of them are setting up a pretty low tax environment.

And they still believe in God. That can't hurt!

They already have the 3d most powerful economy in the EU, if I'm not mistaken. Imagine what they could do if they could get rid of the unions that are causing their unemployment.

At least their unions are patriotic. Unlike most (not all) of the unions in this country.

Patriotic, but badly misguided. They don't seem to understand that fixing wages at artificially high levels causes unemployment.

And the guys who are working end up supporting the guys who are not, so what good is it that their wages are a little higher than they would otherwise be?

Oh, I agree. But the unions recent historic ties with their move to freedom keeps them in a strong position.

Really? All the time? Seems it was no myth as of last year. Just an update in statistics. Congrats, you finally fell to below 19% unemployment. Time to brag to everyone.

You are boring, and you must be really blind if you don’t see that most of new EU members are not socialist as you claiming.

Talk to me when you get below 10%.

High unemployment is because Poland switched from communist system. We need at least three or four years to achieve 10%.

Seems it was no myth as of last year. == Seems it was no myth as of last MONTH.

People with common sense comparing actual unemployment level to the level from the same month of the last year. Poland has unemployment 1,1% lower, than in last year.

I go to Poland twice each year and I see the chronic unemployment as a residue of the old Communist system. A large part of the unemployed are elderly living in rural areas, and there are a lot of such people. Unemployment among the younger Poles is much less, and the Polish economy is thriving. The zloty keeps strengthening against both the euro and the dollar.

Young educated Poles (and the educational system is good and highly competitive) can expect a bright future, especially in a continent where western Europeans seem to be dying out.
