There's a special election to fill a safe republican Congressional seat in Ohio's 2nd District on June 14th, three weeks out. State Rep Tom Brinkman is running. Against Pat DeWine. Senator Mike DeWine's son.
Though I do not favor visiting the sins of the father on the son, conservative primary voters who just watched DeWine the Elder throw some fine conservatives under the bus might not be as forgiving. DeWine the Younger is the favorite. If you are a Ohio voter in the 2nd, send me an e-mail as to whether this is an issue, and especially if Tom Brinkman makes it one. Send any info to hugh@hughhewitt.com.
Pat's a U of M Law grad, so he's got that going for him. Perhaps he can help his dad draft the next "deal" when he gets to Congress.
Update: Many e-mails on this wide-open race. Here's one:
"Hello Mr. Hewitt,
Based on the signs in my local neighborhood, it would appear Jean Schmidt ( http://www.jeanschmidt.com/ ) is the only candidate for the open slot. She is a former state representative and so has some name recognition. I do live in her old state house district and so I had assumed that all these signs could be a local bias. However, about two weeks ago I was driving Back to Cincinnati from Athens, Ohio, and based on the number of campaign signs I saw on that trip I would say she is the leading candidate. I saw one sign for former Congressman Bob McEwen, one for DeWine and about half a dozen for Schmidt.
-- John S."
Here's another:
"We live in Ohio's 2nd district. Below is a repeat, as best I can remember, of the email I sent to Mike DeWine. Senator,
(Some stuff about M. D. not getting any more of my support, etc.)
Then I told him I am in the 2nd district and that the fact that Pat DeWine's father is Mike DeWine would keep me from voting for Pat.
J.B.
Thanks for the heads up about Brinkman (I was wondering whom you would recommend.) "
Actually, I didn't mean to recommend Brinkman. I don't know enough about the race to have a recommendation. I was just curious if DeWine the Elder's mistake would hurt DeWine the Younger, and it has. How much we don't know.
Ohio Freepers need to decide who to support and fast.
I will send $500 to campaign of whoever has best chance of beating DeWine.
Yes. This is how the game must be played. There is too much at stake to play nice. These arrogant Senate "centrists" need to be taught a lesson. Nice lessons have no impact. Ugly ones do. Screw Pat DeWine.

And that is a position that he hasn't given up to make a run for Congress. I guess some could say that he's short changing Hamilton County by job hopping, and I wouldn't disagree.
Just his name alone and this fact would lead me to take a long look at his Republican primary opponent. After all, Mike Dewine probably "sounded" like a Republican at one time also.
If I'm a betting man, I'm NOT betting on a Dewine anymore. I'm not betting on a Voinovich either. Life is too short to be represented by fake Republicans!
Any other reasons to support Brinkman? If he has the best chance of beating DeWine I will send a check.
The sins of thy fathers shall be paid for by their sons
You can't split the vote between two.
I looked at Brinkman's website as soon as it was posted here and it took about two seconds to decide to send $25 and email HH (who still had an hour on the air last night) on it. Now Brinkman has the head start and the mo. Apologies for overlooking any other possibly worthy candidates. But there is only three weeks and that is not time to dither over whom to support.
Good enough.
I sent an email to Senator DeWine yesterday and told him I was ashamed that he had abandoned the Republican party to side with Byrd and the other dwarfs.
I told him I believed his actions made one DeWine in DC to be one too many and with his son in consideration, two DeWines would be unbearable.
After I sent the email, I contacted Jean Schmidt's website and asked for a yard sign. She had always been a reliable Republican voice in Columbus.
I like Schmidt, McEwan and Brinkman in that order. DeWine would be last.
"When I ran for State Representative five years ago, I made three fundamental promises to the people in my district. I vowed to do whatever I could to fight for limited government, to fight for lower taxes, and to fight to end abortion.....I have been relentless in my pursuit of lower taxes, reduced spending and elimination of waste in the State of Ohio. No one else in this race has my record of saying NO to taxes. Every candidate in this race will tell you that they are conservative but when the rubber hits the road, I am the only one with a proven voting record.

I am not from Ohio. I cannot vote. I will send money and may encourage donor friends to do the same. However, the Ohio Freepers need to congeal around one of the alternatives. It does no one any good to split the support.
Thanks.
Ahhh, concealed carry....It makes the thugs think twice and thats a full days work for a lot of them....
Schmidt used to head a Right to Life Branch and is a former state rep. She votes pro-2a. She did however vote for a sales tax.
Brinkman is a current state rep. He's endorsed by GOA(Gun owners of America) and has been a leader on tax issues as well as he 100% anti-tax. He's also strongly pro-life. I met Brinkman at a gun rights convention near Cincy back in 2001 and he seems like a straight shooter to me.
I sent $25 to Brinkman's campaign.
So Brinkman over Schmidt?
Thinking twice takes thugs 2 days. The can only handle one think per day. Then they have to rest.
I'm not going to tell you who to write your checks to, but I gave my donation to Brinkman over Schmidt.
Sounds like there are a couple of pretty good folks running, and I don't want to cut out Ms. Schmidt out, but it looks like Brinkman edges her out with just a little bit more conservatism.
So, I sent Brinkman a small donation via PayPal and also a note as to why.
Flood Hugh Hewitt with calls and e-mails about this.
