I would think it would be quite a coup for ID to demonstrate a correlation between mutation and adaptive success in the absense of selection.

I'm not sure why ID would be interested in making such a demonstration since it does not dispute either natural selection or mutation.

What sense of of the word "random" does ID object to?

In the usual formulation of evolution, mutation is stochastic, or at least not "aware" of its consequenses.
