PROGRAM -- (Senate - May 20, 2005)

[Page: S5714] GPO's PDF

---

Mr. CORNYN. Mr. President, on Monday, the Senate will resume consideration of the nomination of Priscilla Owen to serve as a circuit judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Monday will be the fourth consecutive day the Senate considers the Owen nomination.

Over the past 3 days, a number of Members, on both sides of the aisle, have come to the floor to speak on the nomination. We have conducted over 25 hours of debate, and we will continue on Monday. Moments ago, we filed a cloture motion on the nomination, and that will ripen on Tuesday of next week.

On behalf of the majority leader, I remind my colleagues the leader has announced our next rollcall vote will occur Monday afternoon at 5:30. That vote will be on a motion to instruct the Sergeant at Arms to request Senators' attendance. Senator Frist will have more to say about next week's session on Monday.

As you can see, some people can never acknowledge when their prejudices were wrong about certain people. Frist has received a FEW apologies from some on the board, but the majority will act as they always do. Hide behind keyboard self righteousness rather than admit they may have been in err about the sum of the mans' character.

Frist in the House!

Well, considering the SCOTUS agreed today to hear the case of teenage notification re: abortion, this could be very important, depending on when it is on the schedule.

At least that is the way Fox News portrayed it---that it might not get heard in time to be heard by THIS set of justices....

A RINO is a Republican in name only. If everyone keeps tossing that designation around where it does not fit, it will no longer have any meaning. Frist is NOT a Republican in name only.

Reid wants to know how late they will be going tonight. I believe that Frist basically said "as long as it takes".

Poor Teddy, he won't be able to nip the Chivas Regal this evening.

Frist- Political rhetoric escalated, political civility has suffered. moment draws closer when Senators must decide principle...restore up and down vote or enshrine tyranny of minority.

Frist just said that it could be a very late night tonight and the cloture vote will probably be late tomorrow morning.

I wonder what new attacks that Reid's war room came up with this weekend? IOW, what talking points will EVERY SINGLE dem senator insert into his/her speech?

Does anyone have a theory about why we haven't seen BABS the last 3 days except for a one minute list of insults that she threw at Justice Brown the first day?

Frist is making an argument both of parliamentary procedure: investigate-debate-decide (It is wrong to not decide) and of fairness and Constitutional principle.

He is putting facts in the record that investigation and debate have been exhaustive, and threfore that decision is appropriate.

The reason to permit the Senate to go late tonight is to foreclose an argument that there has not been enough debate.

I welcome a long night. Gives us the opportunity to keep pounding the real RINO's attempts to save the Democrats.

I'm not sure where babs has been. She's usually the front woman for moveon.org, yet she's been absent.

I wish I could be here tomorrow. I'd try to time my lunch for the vote, but I'm not entirely sure when the vote will happen.
