"It unleashed energy equivalent to a 100 gigaton bomb according to Roger Bilham, professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado. That level of energy endured longer than any quake ever recorded. "

Scientists believe more earthquakes of this magnitude are likely to happen.Caused by global warming no doubt. /sarcasm

I thought I felt something...Isn't it amazing that no "psychics" predicted this? Biggest earthquake/tidal wave in recorded history and they're sleeping on the job.

Heh, heh, heh...actually, this is fascinating and I will pursue follow study since this subject is not my strong suit (what is my strong suit I'm still wondering!). Also, will use it at the party I'm attending tomorrow night and see if I can get a lively discussion going!
Thanks, CarrotAndStick!

Can someone please explain how a Tsunami can shake the planet?
Guess they don't pay editors enough to get a REAL education to know how dumb this headline is.

Ah, but it was the massive size of the event that jammed their "sixth sense". Either that, or they were busy trying to predict the outcome of the latest Survivor episode...

Actually,it is the other way round, the Earth shakes under the ocean, causing a tsunami.

Oops. My mistake. On a re-read of the title, it does sound stupid.

I thought Carl Sagan said a multi megaton nuclear exchange would doom us all.

"professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado"
The same university that gives Ward "Indian Fraud" Churchill a pass. The "facts" should be doubted.

Though total angular momentum would be conserved (would it?), perhaps the internal mass shift produced a minor precession?
And, wait... some of the kinetic enrgy would be dissiapted as heat.. so along with a change in moment of intertia due to mass redistributon about axis of rotation (however small), there would be a decrese in total kinetic energy and hence the angular velocity.
Just thinking out loud.. have no idea...
(Wait, isnt the earth slowing down by some XYZ milliseconds p.a. due to ocean friction/tides?)
And yeah, that 1-inch movement was dumb headline... dumb non-scince grads.. ~phutooie!
