LA mayor-elect breaks with governor on civilian border patrols

Los Angeles (AP) --

Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday he opposes civilian volunteers patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border to discourage illegal immigration, putting him at odds with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"We need our Department of Homeland Security, which patrols the border ... to address the issue of security," Villaraigosa, who was elected Tuesday, told CNN.

"We have an old saying from the days of the wild, wild West ... leave your gun outside of the city limits," Villaraigosa added. "It doesn't make any sense for people to take the law into their own hands."

In comments last month that were criticized on both sides of the border, Schwarzenegger praised the so-called Minuteman Project in Arizona, which enlisted hundreds of volunteers, some armed, to patrol the Arizona border to document and report illegal crossings.

"I think they've done a terrific job, and look, they've cut down the crossing of illegal immigrants by a huge percentage," the governor said in a radio interview. A day later he called the federal government "irresponsible" because it has not acted to safeguard the borders.

Aides to Schwarzenegger have said the governor would not object to Minuteman volunteers coming to California, but noted that they would not be allowed to carry weapons under state law. President Bush has called the Arizona volunteers "vigilantes."

Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Margita Thompson had no comment on Villaraigosa's remarks.

Villaraigosa spokesman Joe Ramallo said the Minuteman controversy was not a priority for the mayor-elect,

I think downtown L.A. is about 110 miles from the border, but it's not enought to make a difference, amply demonstrated by Channel 54 in Los Angeles having a billboard that reads "Los Angeles, Mexico".

Your right and I'd bet anything that even if you gave all of California back to Mexico the Mexicans would still be risking their lives to get into Oregon, Nevada and any other state in the U.S they can. The problem is with the Mexican's themselves.
They'd rather flee their slimy pit of corruption than fight like hell to change it.

Tony Villar doesn't sound nearly as ethnic as Antonio Villaraigoas. Same as with Geraldo "Jerry Rivers" Rivera.

Maybe I should change my name to Dainéal O'hUallachain and run for judge to get the "Irish judges" vote.

Is Los Angeles any where near the border? Not yet.

Good answer...

With 100K gang members in L.A. and the murder capital of America, maybe the mayor should focus his attention on his jurisdiction and let Californians be concerned about the border...senor...

Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa has just moved the US-Mexican border north of L.A. with his comments. His drug gang masters will own L.A. and the rest of our southwest soon.

"Is Los Angeles any where near the border? "

I thought it was about 20 miles south of the border?

"It doesn't make any sense for people to take the law into their own hands."

Well, Mr. Mayor, as I understand it, these folks are NOT taking the law into their own hands, which implies they are trying to enforce the law. Rather, they watch for criminal aliens and notify the Border Patrol when they see one. What's wrong with that Mr. Mayor?

Glad I will be Dead in 30 years or sooner. I am so angry at what our elected leaders have done to the America that I once knew. It has become a bad drugstore novel

I feel the same. I was watching the No Spin Zone last night. O'Reilly actually used a scene from the movie Scarface as a real world incident. We get nothing but BS from our government and the media. Common sense and truth no longer count for anything in America.

Now, L.A. won't let the rest of the U.S. extradite killers from L.A.

Not yet.

Maybe Antonio should ask the what the mexican goverment does to the immigrants that come over looking for work south of their border.

Maybe the minutemen should start patrolling many of the congregation areas where the illeagals gather looking for work. They should start taking down the liscense plate numbers and harass those that commit crimes by hiring the illegals in the first place.

I'm thinking that LA is making it's final circular pass around the bottom of the toilet bowl. Too bad, it was a great place to live in the 70's and 80's.

<< President Bush has called the Arizona volunteers "vigilantes." >>

That particular canard is growing big strong legs!

[Not even -- and notwithstanding that he did not call the Arizona volunteers "vigilantes" -- that President Bush has thus far made even one move that I have been able to notice to stem the criminal-alien-invasion and increasingly-hostile colonialization that is destroying our Nation]

BUMPping

"This state is slipping even further away."

Here is my suggestion. Let Mexico annex Southern California. Cut off all water coming from other U.S. states and let it sink into another Third World hell hole. And on top of that deny any aid from U.S. tax payers.

After two years give them the option to opt back in only if they swear to uphold U.S. law on illegal immigration. It would be interesting to see the result of that.
