Coldplay attack 'corporate evil'
Coldplay's Chris Martin has dismissed pressure to boost his record company's profits, saying: "Shareholders are the great evil of this modern world."
EMI issued a profit warning in February partly because the release of the UK band's latest album X&Y was delayed.
But Coldplay frontman Martin said: "I don't really care about EMI. I'm not really concerned about that."
He spoke about the "the slavery that we are all under to shareholders" ahead of the album's release in early June.
'Corporate machine'
Coldplay have sold 20 million albums worldwide, having a big UK and US hit with 2002 album A Rush of Blood to the Head.
Also famous for being the husband of Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow, Martin spoke to reporters before a 90-minute concert at New York's Beacon Theatre on Tuesday.
He said their new album was delayed because their first eight months of recording sessions produced songs that lacked the "spark" of such earlier hits as Yellow, Clocks and The Scientist.
"It's very strange for us that we spent 18 months in the studio just trying to make songs that make us feel a certain way and then suddenly become part of this corporate machine," Martin said.
He said the band's success gave them artistic freedom and the ability to talk about subjects dear to them such as fair trade - paying fair prices for products such as coffee and cotton from developing nations.

Maybe because you need those evil shareholders to supply funds for your "art"?
Coldplay's music is boring and lifeless.
So let him give the money back. I'll hold my breath...
Some of the marketing I saw for this band was on the level of P Diddy and they didn't mind one bit.
They are all multi-millionaires now due to that "label" and they bite the hand that feeds it
again..Prince syndrome...they need to get a grip. Millions of bands will take his place in a minute if need be.
Another one hit wonder weighs in.
There probably isn't a more corrupt industry in the world than the entertainment industry (music, movies, and television). But the stupid artists who believe the scorpion won't sting them are self-deluding.
What cracks me up is these anti-Bush weasels make hit albums for these corrupt record companies and then they bash a legitimate business like Halliburton. The liberal bias doesn't only affect the MSM, it also permeates the record industry. It's the liberals' most direct path to shovel manure into the "young skulls full of mush."
There's a fantastic article that gives the inside scoop on how the music industry works. It's a speech by Courtney Love that tells it as it is. I recommend it to all my guitar students (who are old enough to handle the language) if they show signs of turning to music as a profession.

If they persist in their professional dreams, at least they enter the fray informed. There are alternate paths that are artistically satisfying and financially lucrative that don't involve selling one's soul to get on MTV.
What's an "Album"?
No need to say anymore.
But what always strikes me as irreconcilable is the duality of such opinions expressed by Martin. If he's that ashamed of his wealth and how it was accumulated -- quit your damn record label, produce records on your existing money or give all of it away and go beat on pots and pans and record it to ProTools on your Imac... but quit BITCHING!!!
The vocals are watered-down Sting.
The music is watered-down Joy Division with a touch of prog-rock hauteur.
The song structure is watered-down U2.
The lyrics are watered down Smashing Pumpkins.
Coldplay is about the most derivative rock bansd out there.
Coldplay ain't no ZZ Top.
Chris Martin, oh I just love this guy. Him and his band Cold Cream. Another example of a Bush, USA and capitalism bashing capitalism addicted Euroweenie PR dependent flouncing tart with a self absorbed pedagogic obnoxious product of nepotism teetless twit for a wife. Don`t you just love when they pretend credibility?
"I think shareholders are the great evil of this modern world."
This coming from the largest shareholder of the "band" Cold Cream and the Hollywood connections of Bruce Paltrow and Blythe Danner. What a schmuck. Try naming a kid after a human being for once instead of a fruit, then get outta my face you freggin` moron. It was beyond tiring reading about you Gwen and Apple wallowing in the horror of the Hamptons last year.
Yes it`s very strange that you spend 18 months, strange you even have a career considering The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Motown, Jim Croce, Sinatra and countless others proved it could be done in 8 if not 8 days with 1000% more feeling and quality.
What product sponsors their tours?
What do they do with their ill-gotten gains from record sales? Donate them?
Or she hadn't slept with Harvey Weinstein.
Or she hadn't pushed her mother to prop her up.
Another educated entertainer.
I see he missed his Corporate Finance classes.
Too bad.
The anger I feel right now towards him and his ilk is overwhelming. HOW DARE HE. I wish EMI would cut them off and say directly it was because of this statement. What a freakin ingrate, while he lives in his mansion with his talentless wife and stupid-named baby. Who paid for the mansion you freakin SOB. That evil corporation. If it's so damn evil, GIVE IT BACK. They're not in business so you can sit in some studio for three years banging your bongos.
I'll do my part in the battle against profits and not buy their album.
