Every important Buddhist Temple has a relic of someone, with the highest order temples having Buddha relics (hair, teeth, bones, etc. ) This "Division of the body" was done at Buddha's instruction. So, yeah, it was a very common practice. Ancestor worship practices in China and in Turkey are also kind of interesting though, today, we find them rather gross. Actually, I would feel uncomfortable with Great Grandpa buried beneath my floor.

You probably wouldn't like riding in my truck,
my father is in the glove box.
I like to talk to him at times.

Actually, I would feel uncomfortable with Great Grandpa buried beneath my floor. I could settle for that.
It beats the daylights out of having your embalmed MIL standing in the corner of the room with a lampshade on her head, LEDs screwed into her eye sockets, and a lamp cord coming out of her backside to plug her into the wall.
