Forbidden Planet really IS something isn't it? I've never seen anything quite like it. There's something about it that works in a creepy dream sort of way. I regard it more highly than the more talked about The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Basing it on Shakespeare doesn't hurt. And it is more frightening than most SF.

I regard it [Forbidden Planet] more highly than the more talked about The Day the Earth Stood Still. Both those films, [Forbidden Planet & "The Day...] along with "War of the Worlds" are in my personal "Top Three Best Sci-Fi Films Ever Made" category.
The reason I like "The Day..." so much, is Klsatu's closing speach, right before he gets on board the saucer and gets the heck out of DC:
"...I came here to give you these facts. It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet. But if threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder..."
Not to mention this classic line:
Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!

Forbidden Planet
My favorite cheapo 50s sci-fi movie was "Target Earth," which is kind of a rip-off of "War of the Worlds." It has wonderfully banal dialogue, such as:
Woman: "I wonder what they'll do next?"
Man: "I wish I knew."
And in a city that has been evacuated to save the public from some unknown threat, the [left behind in the city because he had been mugged and knocked out the night before] hero's first decision is to head for the center of the city rather than to get out of the city. lol
