Do you remember when the bridge collapsed on the West Side Highway, I believe in the 1960s?

Just vaguely. On December 16, 1973, in the most ironic of circumstances, a cement truck that was traveling to make repairs on the West Side Highway caused a 60-foot section of the northbound roadway to collapse at Gansevoort Street.

That collapse brought about the closure and eventual demolition of the steel, elevated portion of the West Side H'wy.
