I wonder how they know no one is under that pile of dirt?

As the crow flies, how far is that from, say, the Empire State Building?

In Manhattan travel terms, it's a good distance north. Geographically, it's about 8 miles in a straight line.

I'd estimate about three miles. 20 blocks to a mile in NYC. Empire State at 34th. HH Pkwy at around 100th.

I think the dirt would have slid any vehicles sideways,as opposed to just burrying them from above. But I'm no expert.

Every 20 blocks north is a mile, so subtract 34 from 181, divide by 20, and add a few blocks for crosstown. Too lazy to do it myself.
