Dang it, you're right! I forgot that bit. The poor pilots could only watch the thing blow past them and greet the mole people. I do remember being appalled at the QA failure when I read about it.

Amusing fact: it had two accelerometers for redundancy. They were both mounted backwards. It is amusing that this is almost exactly the same thing that coined Murphy's Law (in its true form): if there are two or more ways to do something, and one of those ways can result in a catastrophe, then someone will do it.
