my question is: Now that I clicked on my "ping" page, these photos are now a permanent part of my internet cache (you don't ever really erase everything, do you?) What if these, for whatever reason--say I went missing 3 days before my wedding but had really run off to Vegas on a bus--were found by authorities looking at my computer?

Any competent investigator will compare your posting history with that one post and draw the conclusion that that was just some a-hole who ddid that to you, that you did not do it.
