Tony Blair is on course to win an historic third term for Labour but with a much reduced majority, according to a joint BBC/ITV exit poll.
The poll suggests Mr Blair's majority will be reduced from 160 to 66.
The findings - based on 13,000 voters from 320 polling stations in marginal seats - were announced as polls closed in the 2005 general election.
Counting is now underway with the first results of the night expected shortly after 2300 BST.

true enough
I prefer Martin to Chretien any day, I just prefer to see neither of them in power
unfortunately as in Britain the Canadian conservatives are somewhat uninspiring.....
our Conservative party has a few excuses - it was decimated three elections back, from the huge majority to two seats, now that's democracy.....and the new party is a merger of the Progressive Conservatives, what we call Red Tories and the old Alliance/Reform party, what we call Blue Tories, I'm not sure how the marriage is going
I like the fiscal conservatism and tax policies of the Alliance which the Progressive Conservatives were sorely lacking under Mulroney.......
My impression is that Canadian conservatives have been making a comeback since the alliance. What are the chances of gaining a majority as the scandal plays out?
Not sure. Maybe we should have helped the Conservatives in their campaign more.
I feel that the Labour Party is going to lead Britain to destruction of their sovereignty. Under the EU Constitution, they won't be able to be an aly of the US and they'll be forced to give up the Pound.
oops what I meant is they are already planning a mutiny, there is always a leadership review when you lose
you see in parliamentary democracies you don't vote for the leader you vote for the local candidate in your riding, the party with the majority of the seats in Parliament gets that leader as their PM
of course Americans elect the President directly so you can't get rid of him except by impeachment......
oh certainly, the Conservatives were very close to a minority government in the last election, just a few seats away, the scaremongering of the Liberals worked to get enough Canadians who weren't going to vote Liberal to switch their votes from NDP to prevent a Conservative government
this is the problem with polls, personally I would ban all polls at least one week before an election, I would ban all exit polling, I would ban all TV election coverage or at least on numbers or predictions until all the voting stations were closed or I would have all voting stations close at exactly the same time, make it staggered, harder for the US with Hawaii
the problem we have is like the US is results are coming in as others are still voting which influences their vote, if they see a party they don't like is winning, they may change their vote to a strategic one......
the chances in the next election, I don't know, Harper has not capitalized on issues as well as he should have, Ontario is going to be the key....the Liberals will lose big in Quebec, what few seats they took last election, but those seats go to the Bloc Quebecois, our own federal separatist party....only in Canada you say? so civilized aren't we?
but you see Harper is from the old Alliance wing of the party if the Conservatives had chosen an old PC party guy, or an Easterner, Ontario voters would be less reluctant, John Tory, the leader of the Ontario Conservative Party would get a majority if he was running, I have no doubt, the Alliance is seen as right wingers and many in Ontario, believe it or not, still say they would prefer the Liberal thieves than the social conservatives......now if the Gomery inquiry gets worse and worse for Liberals and Martin gets implicated deeper and deeper, he already was implicated yesterday in testimony and the Conservatives can come up with a solid platform, they can do it but the Fiberals are master of this thing and they've got our money to run on and give away as bribes......
I personally think the best result would be a Conservative minority but it could just as easily go Liberal majority, oh Canada indeed.......
actually with the way the Liberals will lose even bigger in Quebec this time, I think a majority government for the Libs might be almost impossible
In Britain's system, the Prime Minister is chosen like our Speaker of the House is chosen. Blair is elected in his own House of Commons district.
Blair is paying the price of funding 50% of Uganda's State budget and other mismanagement (+ corruption deeds he supported)in Central Africa and elsewhere together his fellow genociders called Museveni & Kagame.
