I am not Catholic, but at one time I was considering joining the church and becoming a priest. Then I discovered girls and realized I could save myself and the church a lot of problems by looking for another line of work.
This is not solely a problem of the American Catholic church it is a worldwide problem.
It is also not a problem solely of the Catholic Church. Our Protestant churches have the same kind of problems. There are a lot of ministers out there who can't keep the fly zipped up too.

When I was a kid growing up in the Catholic Church (I no longer practice Catholicism in large part because of their tolerance/use of homosexuals as priests/deacons), that was how families in the church planned to "deal" with the male homosexuals in their family--by sending them off to the seminary. It was widely known. I don't think permanent celibacy (in adulthood) is ever legitimate until one has been married and perhaps lost a spouse or been heartbroken.
