Schiavo Judge To Be Honored
Tampa Tribune ^ | May 2, 2005 | Lisa A. Davis

Posted on 05/02/2005 5:06:09 AM PDT by Quaker

NEW PORT RICHEY - Pinellas- Pasco Circuit Judge George Greer, who was thrust into the national spotlight and scrutinized by pro-life advocates during the Terri Schiavo case, was a consistent judge who followed the law, colleagues say.

His professionalism and integrity was punctuated by the way he handled the Schiavo case, said Alan Scott Miller, a New Port Richey lawyer and member of the West Pasco Bar Association.

As part of Law Week, which kicks off today, the association will award Greer, 63, its Special Justice Award.

``He's getting this award for all of his contributions on the bench, not just the Schiavo case,'' Miller said. ``It's like a lifetime achievement award for an actor.''

Greer will receive the award during a banquet Thursday at the Heritage Springs Golf and Country Club, 11345 Robert Trent Jones Parkway.

For years, Greer presided over the politically and emotionally charged Schiavo case, which ended when the 41- year-old woman died March 31, 13 days after her feeding tube was removed a third time on a court order.

Some doctors said Schiavo was in a persistent vegetative state since suffering brain damage after her heart stopped in 1990.

Her husband, Michael, fought for years to have her feeding stopped, saying his wife didn't want to be kept alive by artificial means.

Her parents, hoping she would recover, fought him in court after court.

Eventually, Florida's governor and Legislature and then Congress took up the battle.

Supporters and detractors watched as Greer made rulings backing Terri Schiavo's purported wishes and received threats on his life.

``I don't think anyone could ever say his decisions were unlawful,'' said Joan Nelson Hook, president of the West Pasco Bar Association. ``They were very thoughtful. His decisions were meticulous.

``We admired his ability to sustain the pressure not to follow the law. ... I think that shows his character.''

Steve Doran, association president-elect, echoed Hook's thoughts on Greer's handling of the Schiavo case.

``His decisions in that unfortunate case withstood the test of every appellate court in the country,'' Doran said. ``Those who are criticizing him are not seeing the big picture.''

When the association voted this month on this year's recipient of the Special Justice Award, the result was almost unanimous for Greer.

``He's a man of integrity. He's followed the flow. He's done an excellent job on the bench,'' said Miller. ``That's why he's getting this award.''

In addition to Greer's award, the Law Week celebration offers events that allow the community to get a closer look at what the West Pasco Bar Association and the law profession are about, Hook said.

``It's an opportunity to interact with all levels of the community,'' she said.

``It's not just about battles; law is a way of life.''

Here are some events:

* Representatives of the association will be at Gulf View Square mall in Port Richey offering free legal advice from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

* All week, 22 lawyers will visit Pasco schools to discuss the law and this week's national theme, ``The American Jury: We the People in Action.''

* The 2nd District Court of Appeal will hold a special session at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the West Pasco Government Center, 7530 Little Road, in county commission chambers.

* Business suits, shoes and accessories will be collected at area law offices for Connections, a not-for-profit organization that helps people looking for jobs.

The following law offices are collecting men's and women's apparel:

The Law Offices of Attridge, Cohen & Lucas, 7136 Little Road, New Port Richey; The O'Conner Law Group, 9735 U.S. 19, Suite 2, Port Richey; Pejot Law, 11911 Pine Forest Drive, New Port Richey; and The Law Offices of Gay & Ehrhardt, 5318 Balsam St., New Port Richey.

Press Release: Supporters Protest Judge Greer
May 5, 2005
Fight4Terri@aol.com

This protest is against Judge George Greer who wrote the order to kill Terri Schiavo without ever allowing her due process or freedom of religion. We question his choice as a Judge to blatantly ignore FS 825.102. which states that no one can take food and water away from anyone. He didn't order Terri's feeding tube just removed - he ordered that she could not receive ANY nutrition or hydration AT ALL! He ordered the commission of a felony. In addition, Judge Greer violated Florida Statute 90.602, which clearly disallows the hear say evidence that he not only accepted, but then declared as clear and convincing proof that Terri wanted to die.

To say that his decisions weren't unlawful is a farce and a blatant insult to the citizens in the state of Florida and of Pinellas county. To waste any further words on the actions of Judge Greer, to suggest that he was thoughtful or meticulous in his decisions as a Judge as was cited by Joan Nelson Hook, President of the West Pasco Bar Association, is a slap in the face to the Schindler family and every other disabled person in America! If one can define as "meticulous" his choice to make the most important decision of his career, ordering the execution by dehydration and starvation of a disabled person without ever having stood face to face with that person is a travesty. Ms. Nelson-Hook should be ashamed of herself as should Judge Greer.

Schiavo judge honored
By Times Staff Writer
Published May 6, 2005

NEW PORT RICHEY - Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge George Greer was honored Thursday evening by the West Pasco Bar Association for his "selfless devotion and service" during the Terri Schiavo case and his career on the bench.

"The last several years have been a bit trying," Greer said. "I appreciate this more than you will ever know."

Pasco sheriff's officials kept about a dozen protesters at bay outside the Heritage Springs Country Club in Trinity, allowing only those registered for the dinner inside.

The evening's guest speaker, Judge Morris Silberman of the 2nd District Court of Appeal, said the media and public often had misunderstood Greer's perspective during the Schiavo case.

He had not stood up to the president or Congress in making his ruling to allow Schiavo to die, Silberman said.

"What Judge Greer did, and what judges in general do, is they look to the law, they look for guidance in the law, and they try to come up with the best answer they can within the law."

Thank you for the article.

"The last several years have been a bit trying," Greer said.

Greer put Terri and her family through hell, and he complains that it's been a "bit trying" for him. What a creep.

His ruling came from the pits of hell.

Protesters Demonstrate Outside Event Honoring Schiavo Judge

By LISA A. DAVIS and GEOFF FOX

The Tampa Tribune

NEW PORT RICHEY - Some of the same protesters who stood vigil outside a Pinellas Park hospice as Terri Schiavo slipped away moved north Thursday, trying to keep her memory - and their mission - alive.

As they displayed signs outside the security gate of Heritage Springs Golf and Country Club, they wanted Pinellas- Pasco Circuit Judge George Greer to hear them loud and clear: "Jesus Would Feed Terri," one sign read.

Schiavo, 41, died March 31 - 13 days after her feeding tube was removed by a court order signed by Greer.

At a banquet Thursday night at the club in Trinity, members of the West Pasco Bar Association honored Greer's career - in part for his handling of the emotionally and politically charged Schiavo case - with the Special Justice Award.

"What Judge Greer did, and what judges in general do, is they look to the law, they look for guidance in the law, and they come up with the best answers they can within the law," 2nd District Court of Appeal Judge Morris Silberman said before Greer received the award.

As Greer and banquet attendees approached Heritage Springs, they passed the 15 protesters and their signs with slogans such as "You Are Awarding A Murderer" and "Wanted: Honest Men for Black Robe Jobs."

One girl held a sign that read: "Judge Greer Should Say Sorry to God."

Mary Kimball, of Tampa, held signs with her husband and seven of her children, ages 12 years to 18 months.

"The injustice goes on," Kimball said. "They're spitting on Terri's grave. That's what this is."

"They're putting a big toad on her grave," added Kimball's daughter, Rosie, 10.

Upon accepting his award, Greer received a standing ovation.

"This award I will treasure," he said, holding up the engraved clock. "I will display this clock very prominently in my chambers."

He told the crowd he was aware of the protesters outside.

"These past several years have been a bit trying," he said. "You see my friends out there at the gate. I thank you for not inviting them in."

For years, Greer presided over the right-to-life versus right-to-die battle between Schiavo's husband, Michael, and her parents. Michael Schiavo said his wife did not want to live by artificial means, and her parents said she could communicate and would not want to die.

Doctors had said Terri Schiavo had been in a persistent vegetative state since suffering brain damage after her heart stopped in 1990. Florida's governor and Legislature, then Congress, took up the battle, but appeals courts upheld Greer's decisions.
