Yep, wooden spoon or wooden paintstick (yyy-ouch!!) was the mid-grade punishment (above hand-to-backside, but below the 'capital punishment' of the belt, administered by Dad....but only meritted once or twice).

Ahhh! The dreaded paint stick. I vividly remember wanting to wear my nice dress with red tulips instead of shorts and Mom said no. One pop on the back of the legs with the stick and I wore the shorts. I was five. That's the only spanking I remember from my Mom. Having observed my older brother's punishment with the belt, my Dad only had to give me "the look". Those were the good ole days.
