I was watching a documentary about the brain (on Discovery or some similar channel) which stated that spanking works because there is an immediate release of adrenalin, which essentially "burns" the memory into the brain.
Sounded plausible to me. I can still remember spankings I got forty years ago - and why I got them. ;)
