Grits are 'whores,' MP says
BILL RODGERS, SUN OTTAWA BUREAU
A veteran Conservative MP cranked up the name-calling a notch yesterday, declaring his Liberal opponents the political version of hookers.
"They're whores," said B.C. Tory John Reynolds.
"I don't like to call them that because there are probably some whores who are nice people."
Reynolds, who will head up his party's national election campaign, was responding to increasing attacks from Prime Minister Paul Martin and New Democrat Leader Jack Layton that the Conservatives are jumping into bed with the separatist Bloc Quebecois to topple the minority government.
"The Liberals will do anything to try and scare people in Ontario and other parts (of the country)," Reynolds said. "I think Stephen Harper as prime minister will make damn sure Quebec stays in the country."
The Conservatives yesterday released a long list of their motions on issues that were defeated in the Commons when the minority Grits teamed up with the Bloc Quebecois. They include last month's attempt to amend the Liberal budget and a motion that called on the government to direct more resources to buy new defence equipment.
The news release also noted that the PM's Quebec lieutenant, Jean Lapierre, was a co-founder of the Bloc Quebecois.
In a pre-election speech in Calgary yesterday, Harper attacked Liberal "corruption" and made health care a platform cornerstone.
Harper told the packed crowd that "when" he's elected prime minister he will deliver to Canadians "clean land, clean air and clean water through clean government."
But many believe it was the Conservatives' position on health care that cost them the last federal election and, in what amounts to pre-election manoeuvering, Harper fired the first round in the medicare debate and solidified his party's position on the Canada Health Act.
Harper also went against predominant Conservative minds such as Mike Harris and Preston Manning, who propose the Canada Health Act be scrapped and the feds be kicked out of the health-care business.
"The Conservative party of Canada fully supports the evolution of the Canadian health-care system within the framework of the Canada Health Act," said Harper at a Fraser Institute lunch.
Harper admitted there are problems plaguing the delivery of health services but that's not because the act is flawed, but due instead to an aging population and the fact that more medical treatments and services are available than before. But privatizing the system won't fix those problems, he said.
Harper also promised to increase health-care funding.
At least whores give you something for your money.

Smart - politics is the art of the possible, it has been said. Modify the message to one that Canadians will find palatable. If we are to continue to have a publically funded health care system in this country, then it needs major changes, but most Canadians don't seem to realize it or want to admit it. I support continuing a publically-funded system, but with major modifications - we are, I believe, the only country in the world with such a system where there is no private or alternative component at all.
I wouldn't want the Conservatives to take on the Liberal's behaviour of doing anything that will get them or keep them in power, but at the same time they're not going to accomplish much if they never get into power.
Almost. We share that honour with North Korea and Cuba.

You've got that right.
I may have to hold my nose to eat them.
LOL.
Enjoy yours! They are much better for you then mine are!
