He wasn't portrayed as immoral so much as amoral. Someone who was intered in that subject matter and wanted to discuss it desepite attempts to shut him up. And the infamous interview with the child molestor is very much shown with revulsion.

Yes...a trick of Hollywood. Portray a pervert as "amoral" when actually his morals are disgusting.
Old trick, but effective on many who are unwise.
