Her mate was beating her and brutalizing her, and she wanted to leave. Lewis and Clarke welcomed her ability to find food, fish, and talk to the natives. Must have been the baby of one of her abusive captors. She was found by her brother as the expedition crossed the Bitteroots, and pretty much helped to save the starving expedition by helping them winter in the mountains.
