Because a coin lasts so much longer than a bill that in the long run it is economically a better investment to make coins. As someone upthread mentioned, it will only work if at the same time they eliminate the paper dollar
The only place I see these coins used is at the post office.
They use them for change at the self-service postal machines.
Put in a ten dollar bill for a book of stamps and you'll get two dollar coins and change back.
We never use them, just put them in our change bin, and when we "cash in" our change, we give the coins back.
