I just can't believe that people cannot afford to spend an extra 30-40 a month on gasoline.
I should rephrase that . . . I just can't believe that people can't tighten spending by 30-40 a month to account for higher gas prices.
How does most everything you purchase reach the place where you do so?
It's costing me about an extra $150 a month. At least that much.

I can. Lot of people are strapped (due to overspending, lost jobs, lower paying jobs, have to pay more for health insurance etc). My wife is a vet and some people can only pay $10 or 20.00 a month to pay their bill.
A good friend has a heating/pluming business. It used to be if their hot water heater went out they would pay the whole bill in cash or check. Today they want to make $25 or 50.00 monthly payments.
Of course most people are not like this but it's getting worse.
I was in a drug store about a month ago, and struck up a conversation with a little girl in line behind me. She asked me where I live, and I told her, "Oh, just a couple of blocks from here." She said, "Me too; it's not so bad." I asked her what she meant, and she said "the walk." She went on to explain that she and her mom walked whenever they could in order to save money on gas.
