No.Reread both articles.Pence wants at least 6% private accounts, without compromise with the DEMS.The leadership wants to cave and have little or no private accounts, only add ons,and they want to raise the CAP.Pence is leading the conservatives on this and every other issue. The RINOS are mad at Pence because he will not compromise and expand government and taxes.

Marcaroona, I see the point you are making in this post and the subsequent one(s). I think that SS was a problem from the beginning. There are not enough bodies to support the retirement of the babyboom generation getting ready to retire. It's simple mathmatics. I am 32 and do not even plan SS into my retirement. I have been investing monthly since I was 18 and am not counting on a single dime from SS. wether or not I trust us repubs on this issue is not at issue. i am a die-hard republican and understand that there needs to be SOMETHING done. IMO

Yes, More taxes.

Blow the lid off the cap, and the people in influential positions in this country that go with RINOS and Dummies, and make up a large swath of the opinion making electorate will be so highly pissed, that Privatization will be the only option on the table.

Expressed as a percventage, its a small number of people, but their voice will be disporoportionate, and bi-partisan.

What's going to happen is that the RINOs and RATs will raise the retirement age, and/or increase taxes and Bush is going to sign the damn thing amid pomp and festivities.

Then 10 years down the road liberals are going to whine that Bush "didn't do enough" to fix SS.

Any SS plan that doesn't include personal accounts is just more rearranging the tableware on the Titanic. In addition, the WH has been horribly inept on marketing this plan and have allowed the socialists to monopolize the debate.

In the meantime, I'm already planning my retirement as if SS doesn't exist, which theoretically it doesn't.

"Conservative lawmakers are still bitter about being pressured to vote for the prescription-drug bill that deteriorated the financial future of Medicare."

I'm bitter that they voted for it, too. And I'm bitter that Bush pushed them to do so. It has created a massive unfunded liability - - - giving the Democrats a ready excuse to lobby for higher taxes in coming years. Thanks, President Bush. Not.

Pence wants Bush to quit negotiating and start fighting for 6% personal accounts."""

That's a tall order. Now if Pence could get Vincente Fox to make this request of Bush, maybe Bush would listen.

Let me give you an example of how pensions work in the real world - my own personal case. I have a private pension from a large organization I worked for, and SS, of course. I get statements from both. A few months ago I was doing filing and came across my last year's statement from each. I was shocked to see that the private pension was now worth several hundred dollars LESS a month - I think it was $900 less a month in benefits projected for my retirement - than it was the year before.

I'm sorry, I'm not letting this one go by. I am a professional investor and your numbers are either total nonsense or you have the misfortune of incompetence in the way your company directed its plan. Comparing a private pension plan (Defined Benefit Plan in corporate parlance) to a Personal Account (Defined Contribution Plan) is apples and oranges.

What are the facts you are leaving out? Did your company pension solely invest in company stock? If so, shame on the company's executives for allowing this. If the investments are diversified, you are either misreading your statement (after all, the markets rose last year) or you are purposely misleading everyone here to further your agenda. Prove me wrong by posting your statements from 2003 and 2004, along with the investment report of the plan.

To have a $10,800 reduction in annual projected benefits is pretty much impossible financially unless you are Enron. That would require a reduction of at least $150,000 in your account balance (assuming an imputed rate of return of 7% on the actuarial assumptions of your plan). Which means that before this loss, you would have received a heck of a lot more on the plan than Social Security would pay.

It is a big liberal, political cycle that must be stopped.Pence is the guy to do that.

BALTIMORE — House conservatives said yesterday they will fight for a Social Security plan that goes into effect immediately and includes larger private accounts than the president is calling for, and they will not accept an overall increase in Social Security entitlement spending.
"Conservatives want to see personal retirement accounts that have immediate relevance to younger Americans, that they can see the value, and that will require that they be big and that they be implemented in the final bill without delay," said Rep. Mike Pence, Indiana Republican and chairman of the 100-member Republican Study Committee (RSC).

About half of the RSC's members have been brainstorming in Baltimore the past two days at a retreat sponsored by the Heritage Foundation. Mr. Pence said the group has come to agreement on principles for fiscal discipline and Social Security, and are prepared to be the conservative balance trying to give the president the backing to pursue the boldest possible plans on both issues.
Mr. Pence has said he wanted to stake out a position early enough to avoid a repeat of the 2003 Medicare debate, when he thinks conservatives were late to object to the direction of the bill. Many conservatives were angered when President Bush signed off on a bill that lacked the reforms they had wanted.
Mr. Pence said this time around feels different.
"They're starting on conservative principles and working toward the middle instead of starting in the middle and then coming to the right," he said.

That's just for starters. Just because I'm a Conservative, doesn't mean I'm a damn fool, or a patsy for the Republicans.

LOL, talk about taking someone to the woodshed! Welcome to FR, you'll do just fine here.
