Moms hold breast-feeding protest in Fla.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - A city commission candidate was criticized for breast-feeding her daughter during a public meeting, so 16 other mothers turned up and nursed their children at another gathering as a show of support.

Gabrielle Redfern apologized for offending anyone, but says she won't stop breast-feeding her child when necessary. She had been criticized by some for breast-feeding her 1-year-old daughter, Elsie, during Mayor David Dermer's recent State of the City address.

"Elsie's been coming to public meetings since she was 2 weeks old," said Redfern, who is in her first bid for public office. "I shouldn't have to choose between being a publicly involved citizen and being a good mother."

On Wednesday, 16 women held a "nurse-in" in support of Redfern, breast-feeding their babies at a Miami Beach Commission meeting.

"How is she supposed to raise her child and have a career if she isn't allowed to breast-feed her child when she attends meetings?" said Ellen Sandoval, who came to show her support. "I quit working because I didn't know or have the courage to do what she is doing."

State law says a woman can breast-feed her child anywhere she is otherwise legally allowed to be. But even in a city where topless sunbathing is common, others say there should be limits.

"I think it's a beautiful and natural thing, but there's a time and a place for it," said Joe Fontana, who regularly attends community meetings. "It's distracting. Why inside? Why not step outside to do it?"

Liberals are as confused as a hungry baby in a topless bar.

Then your friend had some good nurses. Most hospitals don't tell the mother that it takes a day or two for the milk to come in. They put pressure on the mother by saying "If you don't have milk by tomorrow morning then we'll have to start formula". Babies don't need to eat right away after their born. It's just a scare tactic from the formula producers.

If she really cared about her daughter, she'd quit her job and stay home with her. If she can't afford to quit, then she should pump and leave the breastmilk with whoever is caring for her child.

A baby does not belong in work-related meetings anyway.

I have nursed one baby or another for 8 1/2 years out of the last 11. I love my life. Just because you wouldn't, doesn't mean you are compelled to be nasty to Izzy.

I don't have any so-called "hang-ups" about breasts, but I don't think that it's necessary to whip 'em out in public like a Hottentot either.

I don't recall the article stating that she "whipped" them out. I remember reading that she simply breast fed her baby. She shouldn't have to starve her child just because of your insecurities.

"but it really should be a more natural sight, really not equivalent to peeing in public."

Everyone urinates - only women breastfeed. If breastfeeding in public is acceptable, urinating should be as well.

I'm all for breastfeeding babies. It is best for them. But to demand to flop it out anywhere and everywhere is a whole other thing. Babies don't belong at work anyway.

If, I were the owner of the restaurant, I'd tell her to but her lung back in her shirt.

Learn some anatomy. It's not the mother's lung that we're talking about. You sure seem to be one insecure person.

"You've obviously never used a pump..."

Nope, but plenty of women are in the work force and for some reason their able to not bring their babies to work and they still breastfeed.

but there's a time and a place for it

Funny, I always thought the time and place were: when ever the baby gets hungry, and where ever you happen to be at that time.

I agree it was innapropriate in a meeting.

But I think it should be a perfectly accepted normal sight at restaurants, parks, and other places children are and people eat and play. It's twisted to think boobs are only sexual, and not twisted to nurse children. Most women are modest anyway when they do it... when was the last time you saw someone 'flop it out' in an obvious way in public? In real life, I mean... not in some weird protest.

My baby boy - now 30 years old - used to come home from school and nurse.(kidding) It was sorta funny. My wife put charcoal on her boobs and told him they were too nasty to nurse - he went and got a washcloth to clean 'em up. He finally quit but he was over 2 years old.

Its just an old term I heard of a preacher using during a sermon. Its a joke, which as I remember, you're not good at taking.

Your tagline is completely opposite to this phrase that you wrote. Have you read any of the Bible? Breastfeeding is about the most natural thing out there! Get over your hangups...
