HARTFORD, Conn. Connecticut on Wednesday became the second state to recognize same-sex civil unions, and the first to do so without court pressure.
About an hour after the state Senate sent the legislation to her desk, Gov. M. Jodi Rell (search) signed a bill that will allow thousands of gay and lesbian couples in Connecticut to be given the same rights and obligations as heterosexual couples, but not an actual marriage license.
"The vote we cast today will reverberate around the country," said Sen. Andrew McDonald (search), co-chairman of the legislature's Judiciary Committee, and one of a few openly gay state lawmakers.
Last week, the House of Representatives amended the bill at the governor's urging to define marriage under Connecticut law as existing between one man and one woman.
The Senate gave final legislative approval to the amended bill Wednesday afternoon on a 26-8 vote.

I'm glad I live in the south.

Why? Save the word, lose the institution. Big deal. Why bother?
REPUBLICAN Jodi Rell signs the bill. The northeast is useless. Best decision I ever made moving to Texas from Connecticut.
Many of these northeastern "Republicans" are just cleaner versions of the Rats. I hope that a Rat takes Jodi out next year, if she runs.

My own reaction to this story shocked me.
Removing issues of morality from the equation, what has happened here is a tremendous victory for all Americans. The state representatives discussed and debated the issue, a majority of those representatives voted in favor of the legislation, and the CEO of the state enacted the bill by signing into law.
Textbook representative republic in action.
My one concern is that the judicial branch could use this as some sort of precedent. I mean, they already look to Africa and beyond to find laws that fit their perspective on how things SHOULD be.
Is this concern of mine warranted?
just nipples and cockvalves
That's for sure. But the vibrations aren't the happy rejoicing you're hoping for.
hey now
leave NH out of the northeast definition yes it broke my heart when NH went Blue but it was close.

If you don't mind loud banging noises from things hitting walls or flying through windows....or yelling and cursing. But that's just the women. For the men, just as long as you don't have any boys in your home...or if you're a man and you don't mind being hit on by another man then I suppose it might be fine for you...
Regarding real estate, that's a crazy theory. Certain industries that make the big bucks also tend to create homosexuals out of their workers -- the entertainment industry for example. But the bucks have nothing to do with the perversion directly. It's not about kids either. So your theory is lame. But throw money at perversion if you want to. It's your money.
which sex? :D
