For most of their existence the Marines were considered just a subunit of the Navy, not a separate branch.
Well, you know they are a department of the Navy. The Men's Department, that is.
Even now, when discussing acquisition, budgets, and other service-level items, rarely do you hear senior military personnel mention the Marine Corps. It's always Army, Air Force, Navy - because they're all departments.
Look into the many attempts by our "sister" services to kill the Corps, permanently. Some are still trying.

No not one single Marine. Probably has to do with the fact the're not their own independent branch of the Armed Services...they are still part of the Department of The Navy...albeit the MENS Department! LOL!
