Classes were tense but orderly at Jefferson High School today after unrest that attracted extraordinary security and the city's top political and education officials.
To enhance safety, entry was limited and security officers with wands checked students for weapons. A total of 44 school and Los Angeles Police Department officers patrolled the campus today.
Officials also barred gang paraphernalia and provided bag lunches, in part to avoid concentration of students in the cafeteria, the flash point of several melees.
Officials estimated that school attendance was down by 1,400 students.
The relative calm today followed two melees on the campus on East 41st Street in less than a week. Several students were injured.
More than 100 black and Latino students were involved in what administrators said was a racially and gang-motivated brawl Monday. Officials said school police used pepper spray to defend themselves and quell the melee. Six students were arrested and another suffered a broken hip.

Hmm. Race riot at a school. Solution? Slap the offenders on the hand (only preverbably, lest there be charges of child abuse) and send them back. What a waste of time.
Toss the gang punks into jail until there is either no gang punks left to terrorize everyone else or they get the picture that someone might be serious.

And people wonder why only 8% of the school district's kids are qualified for college.
Somehow we have to find some way to blame this on Angry White Males®
This kind of stuff would never happen if they'd raise teacher's salaries and teach more diversity!

The only students I've seen on television news are Latino. I'm beginning to think they outnumber black students.
Historically, Jefferson has been a black high school. I'm thinking there's been a Latino takeover and the blacks are not going without a fight.
Separate school and State.
Well, of course, they have been oppressed so terribly by "angry white males" and their victimization and caused them to lash out. see, we can blame everything on "angry white males"

There are not enough LAPD officers to effectively provide adequate coverage but there are enough to police one high school, eh?
