No, they won't retreat entirely from the Church. But they are sure going to be on the run and made uncomfortable. A "Pope Ratzinger" is a pretty strong message from the College of Cardinals.
But most of the hardcore liberal Catholics are really already cut off from the Church. They cannot receive any sacramental graces no matter how many times they partake of a sacrilegious communion. They are only hardened more and more in their sin.

One of the guest speakers on Fox News said that he suspected that the Holy Father WILL be making some changes. Actually he hinted that it will be more of an enforcement of the already established rules.
