Valid point. I suspect they could not get enough consensus on other candidates (obviously). And the thinking might be better to go with a solid orthodox candidate with a lot of experience and proximity to JP II. Also, the cardinals may be aware there is a very dire need to try to revive Europe on a Christian/Catholic basis.

Reviving Catholicism on the right - among the orthodox and conservatives - is a geopolitical move as well as a theological and moral one. He will face down the "culture of death" cabals. Watching how they react should prove fascinating. Cokie Roberts, McBrien, Stephanopoulboy,et al. on ABC provided a sneak preview. This should prove to be an interesting drama.

At first I wanted Cardinal Arinze. But the more I thought about Cardinal Ratzinger, the more sense it made.
