OH - that I could not see - though the early posters on this thread told of the rush to Vatican Square by the throngs of overjoyed people.
"There's still a spark of faith left in Europe. I hope Benedict XVI can fan the flame".
Amen - so desperately needed - let's pray he can.
MSNBC showed the new Pope's hometown. The townspeople were out in the streets - overjoyed at this news. Then later the streets were empty. Reason? All were in the Town's central church rejoicing together in the church over this wonderful news.
The people of Germany need this spark of faith fanned for sure - but it is a delight that at least for today it burned brightly.

They make me cry every time, too. He touched my heart so deeply .. his pure and his dutiful and selfless servie, and especially in his last days. I will never forget his death and funeral, and I will never forget the jubilation of today!

Quasimodo, The Huntchback (sic) of Notre Dame. Uh, yeah I know, the "classic" one with Charles Laughton, one of my favorite movies as a kid.
When I saw that big bell ringing in St. Peter's the scene with Quasimodo swinging on the bells of Notre Dame popped into my head.
I was just lucky I found a pix with him looking quizzical (not hard to do in that makeup, LOL) and matching picture of him about to jump on the bell.

Thank you for post 742 - the announcement finally of the identify of the new Pope. May God bless and keep and inspire and lead this pope every moment of every day.

It is so wonderful to get to a thread & see it has 2700+ posts !
but I am sure most will be worthwhile in comments/observations.
I was very impressed with what I had previously read about Cardinal Ratzinger... only down side is his age but I guess it is good to have a mature man with good qualities, even for a short time...
May the Lord give him a clear mind & good wisdom during his remaining years.
I am thrilled they chose another strong conservative. Sends a message out...
Thanks for thread R4E...
