How many times I have to point out these are probably not the work of Malachy?

I'm not one for prophecies myself, but the way the world is going, there just might be something to it.

I understand where you're coming from! In hindsight, we'll know whether the prophecies we're considering apply to the current situation. I'd be very unhappy if we lost Pope Benedict any time soon :-).

The way I look at it, Christians have *always* thought the End was coming Any Day Now ... and so far, it's always been wrong. On one hand, you should live as if each day was your last ('cause You're Gonna Die, as we said in the life insurance business :-), and on the other hand, eventually it's going to be the real end of the world, but ... It never seems to come before my mortgage payment is due!

I like the photo on the left in your post very much. Pope Benedict XVI looks very humble in it.

To all of the Catholic FReepers: Congratulations on the election of your new Pope! May his days be blessed and may God's will be done.

My prayers are with you all and Pope Benedict XVI!!

I agree with that. but, given his age, I just think Ratzinger's focus is going to be on the Church, and not on the wider world. Clearly the cardinals wanted a transitional papacy.

Does Ratzinger speak English?. "Culture wars" are central to the Church=-false understanding of freedom as "doing what you please"; culture of death etc.--it's as much inside the Church as outside--the Church is in the world. Yes, he speaks English.

I'll be searching for transcripts later, when my DSL connection comes back on for real ... right now, I've got a 5-minute link that my husband set up, and I keep having to reset it!

Now, and the Presidential election, is when I wish we had TV!

Yes. We have a Polish Pope followed by the first German Pope.

"Either this is weirdly accurate, or the new pope has just forced the issue."

Neither. The Holy Father is not of the Benedictine Order.

We have a Polish Pope followed by the first German Pope.

Actually, he's not the first German to occupy the office.
