Bill won because of Ross Perot. I never bought into that myth. The Perot vote was split pretty much evenly between Dems and GOP. Bush lost it due to a sagging economy (mostly because of slow fed action) and Bush's flop on his no new taxes pledge. The race would have been slightly closer without Perot, but I don't think Perot was the deciding factor. Perot definitely played no role in Dole's lose.

The GOP gave Clinton the election by nominating Dole, the same way the Dems gave Bush the election by nominating Kerry.
The GOP is no longer the party of small government and many now see no difference between the DP and RP. The Southpark Republicans will determine the outcome of the next election, and they aren't blindly loyal to any party. They were the big increase in voter turnout in the last election, and their numbers will increase as more of them come of age.

The myth is that Perot pulled evenly from Republicans and Democrats. Partly true, but if you realize that the Democrats he drew were the Reagan Democrats--you know, those Democrats who're willing to vote for a good Republican--you start to see the fallacy.
