When my father took the first and only cruise in his life it was from NY to Nassau in January. On the first night the ship was pitching and rolling quite a bit and on first light he decided to look out the porthole in his stateroom that should have been 15 ft above the water line and saw only water.

"'Freak' wave rocks cruise"

Man. . .I thought Freak Wave was a rock group and was rocking the ship. Guess I had that wrong.

I suspect the ship was heading north in the Gulf Stream which flows north. I suspect that the gale force winds (greater that 35 knots) was blowing from the north. This makes the wind direction opposite to current direction.

With those conditions, large waves are generated. They are not "freak" waves. They are not "tidal" waves. They are a special wave type found under those conditions.

The same things happen off the east coast of Africa. There they sometimes sink an oil tanker.

All passengers would be given a partial refund, a credit for a future trip and access to the ship's open bar

So what are they complaining about?

WoW! Thank God no one was killed. I just watched my friend's kids so they could take a cruise to the Bahamas last week. They got on the ship in Miami. They got caught in a bad storm and their ship had to remain in port in FL for an extra day. I would have freaked out if I had read this while they were on that trip.

Good thing she didn't 'turnturtle'.

Guess there really does have to be a morning after.
