And when you talk about border security, George, it's -- it would be better if our Border Patrol agents were chasing down drugs and guns than trying to chase down people. And by that I mean, it would be a much more efficient use of taxpayer's money if the system were legal, the worker system was legal so that the Border Patrol could focus on other issues. In other words, if it were legal, people wouldn't have to get in the back of an 18-wheeler. If it were legal to come here and work, you wouldn't have to walk miles across the hot desert. And it would make it easier to protect our border with an immigration system that worked on legalizing work.

Of course by the same logic you could legalize drugs and then just layoff the border patrol. Shazam!

You can't get thru by just saying "I am an American". Everytime I have reentered the country I have had to show an ID. A driver's license is sufficient.

I wonder if Tom Tancredo is the only elected official in the country who can see the dangers on our borders?

He's certainly one of the few demagogue's. Of course he's got his own 'basement' issues.

His concern was impeding the flow of legitimate traffic across the border. Allowing more than one non-standardized form of ID is higly innefficient and is counter to his desire to make crossing easier. Therefore his logic is "flawed".

Customs should explore requiring an original copy of a birth certificate, with a seal along with photo ID.

Those are the most easily forged and counterfeited documents, unlike our passport, which is why we want the passport.

It would cost me over $600.00 to get passports for my family, a price I am unwilling to pay.

Nobody is requiring you to pay anything, and I'll bet the price of passports drops dramatical before they implement this.

Half a million a year at gated entry points verse how many millions along ungaurded borders????

I just think there has got to be a better way than, quite frankly, the inconvenience of getting a passport, especially with Canada. We have huge trade with the Canucks up in Detroit and passports would just be another piece of paper.....

. So a dollar spent on border "security" is one less dollar spent on disarming Qaddaffi or dropping a JDAM on Zarqawi.

Exactly. But you've got union thugs of the border patrol that would rather bash the President and scare the citizens into keeping their paper pushing, donut eating jobs.

When I go to Italy I will need a passport to get into Italy and back into the States. Do you think that's wrong or just wrong to require them for crossing to Canada and Mexico?

Therefore his logic is "flawed".

He has not made a decision. So the only logic to which you can assign "flawed" is his decision to look at all alternatives.

Here's an idea use the money paid for passports to increase border security!

Jeb has lost appeal slightly because his brother is in office now and the Schiavo case fiasco. But hypothecially speaking, what if hillary or another liberal dem wins in 08? who else could you nominate except the "hated" bush family by democrats to spite them in 2012? or 16? American voters have a short memory span. Jeb is a good guy and a very capable leader. I just dont like the politicking going on in Capitol hill right now.

We go from Buffalo to Toronto a lot. It has gotten much harder to get into Canada with kids, too. We have begun to take passports just because it's easier. Not like the 10 year old has a driver's license we can bring!

I said non-citizens should ALWAYS need a passport to get in here, no matter where they are from.
My b*tch is what they are doing to citizens in the guise of "national security" while not fixing the real problems.

This headline is TOTALLY misleading as to what the President said

But but... who needs to read articles anyway when you can just do knee-jerk postings. It's sooo much more fun.

"I am stunned by this comment."

I'm not stunned, but I am disappointed. I love our President, but this issue is his 'achilles heal' as it were. He's wrong, and he can't seem to see it.

Then the process by which he makes decisions is flawed if he uses a case in point than contradicts his end goal.

You have decided his end goal; he has not.
