The operative word there is "MARRIED".
The operative word there is "MARRIED".
In an intriguing history of the middle ages I read some years ago, the upper class in England and Europe married quite young since they could afford it, women often in their mid teens and men not much older were common ages.
The lower classes married older, often in their mid to late twenties, since they were poorer and had a harder time supporting families. The financial necessity of later marriages was considered one of the hardships of life; it was considered desirable to be able to marry younger.
This guy's older than me. WTF's he doing with a 14 year old?
Actually, the life expentancy was much more than 35. The fact that many babies and children died brought the averages down. Once a person survived childhood, he had just about as good a chance as anyone now for living up into his/her 70s.
The whole life expectancy thing is greatly misunderstood.
Moral Absolutes Ping.
Interesting discussion about ages of marriage and so on.
For many people it would be beneficial to marry young. The only reason that is discouraged now is because it is socially acceptable to be promiscuous before marriage.
So by the time a man and woman are married, they are likely to have had sexual relationships with others. This is very destructive to a happy marriage, and increases the likelihood of divorce. Until a couple of generations ago, this was the standard. Obviously not always lived up to, but it was considered the ideal.
Let me know if you want on/off this pinglist.
Note: who does the destruction of lifelong faithful marriage hurt the most?
Maybe he's waiting until she's 18 and legal!
