The Iowa's are too big, too highly manpower requirements, too old to rebuild .. re-engine, etc.

They'ed be better replaced with large "dumb" steel-hulled ships that are redundantly engineered, with lighter (M-1 tank-styled Chobham (multi-material/multi-plated/layered/compartmentalized) armor) (as in carriers) and with large displacements BETWEEN redundant compartments.

Hundreds of missiles (not several dozen!), light-weight guns (but with extended range munitions, .... Empty voids and empty compartments don't need thousands of sailors to paints, man, and clean and maintain.

Gas turbines... Or combined with smaller nukes for lower-power continuous ops?

If they are equiped with much more reliable electronics, with multiple redundancies, and better performance. They don't have to be "dumb" steel-hulled ships.
