"ESL" is "English Second Language" which means these assistants are trying to teach English to muslims? Are a lot of the students of the Islamic religion?

I believe many of these may be Somali as there is a big Somali illegal immigrant problem around Columbus.

In the article, it states that Northland is now home to one of the largest concentrations of Somalis in the US. Columbus, Ohio is home to the second-most Somali immigrant population in the US. It started in 1996. Black Hawk Down - 1993. Yet another Clintonista success.

If you go to mapquest, Northland, Ohio is a little too close to Mifflin High School.
