This was not a golden moment in American history.

A Pueblo survivor spoke to my Kiwanis club last year. It was utterly fascinating.

Hmmm...I wonder who was President in 1968? Was he a Democrat?

This is why we are perceived as weak. that was an act of war and the retaliation should of been dramatic!

Let them keep their trophy. It'll be a reminder to them if we decide to "do an Iraq" on them.

"although they later said they only did so because of pressure from the North Koreans."
What kind of journalism is this? They have clearly documented that they were tortured, beaten, etc., routinely.

The Norks towed it from the east coast to the west coast back in the 1990s. President Clinton's administration refused to intercept it while it was off the South Korean coast. It continues to be the Nork's premier propaganda piece.

The Pueblo was based here in San Diego.
In the early 90s I got to shake hands with
its skipper Lloyd Bucher.
I remember when the crew returned here and
were all taken up the street from me to the
Navy Hosp.

I recall the incident well. I was serving a tour of duty at FMF Pacific at Camp Smith, Hawaii. As was the custom, the Marine Corps Band played a serenade prior to "colors." It started with a lively rendition of "Don't Give Up the Ship." The Marine Color Guard started to raise the flag as the National Anthem was played, only to find the lanyards were reversed and the flag started to go up "upside down." These things occurred before the Pueblo incident was know, about an hour later. There were some other reactions, but while the whole event caused alarm, there was some directed humor too.

I still think the Pueblo should have been scuttled. Absent that, we should have (and should today) taken the Pueblo out.

I remember a picture NK released of the crew. Many of the crew were flipping the bird to the camera. The local (family) newspaper titled the picture..."American servicemen showing the traditional American sign of defiance".
To: Chi-townChief
The crew members were filmed signing a letter of apology and confessing, although they later said they only did so because of pressure from the North Koreans. This story fails to mention the crew posing for a photo, flipping the camera an American Good Luck signal. They got some extra beatings for that.

A laser guided bomb is very precise. I understand you can sink a small ship with one, and if it's tied up in port it's very easy.

I think if we did it, Kimmey boy would pee his pants and go into hiding with his porno films. It could be the start of freedom for the poor poor souls of the North.

I'm imagining the day we casually tow it back to the States. That is, after the fall of one of the most wicked governments in existence. We will, one day, give her a decent burial. It will be on our terms. I think it deserves the same promise made by MacCarther to the Philipines. We too, will one day return.
