Islam Key Factor in Deciding Next Pope

VATICAN CITY, With the high importance of dealing with Islam and Muslims’ issue, all candidates for the highest Papal seat have strongly expressed positions on whether relations with the Muslim world should be conciliatory or a notch more confrontational.

The Vatican’s 155 cardinals will meet to select the next pope to succeed John Paul II, who adopted a ground-breaking strategy for enhancing dialogue with Muslims.

Cardinal Angelo Scola is among the leading Italian candidates who adopts liberal ideas on bolstering dialogue with the Islamic world.

“Integration with the Muslim world will take place in Europe, because I cannot see where else it can happen,” Scola said recently, referring to the growing number of inter-marriages and contacts.

In 1986, the late pope invited Muslims and followers of other faiths to Assisi to pray together for world peace.

In May 2001, he became the first pontiff to make an official visit to a mosque in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Cardinal Francis Arinze, from Nigeria, a man who grew up among Muslims and says there is no clash of cultures.

“God can speak to us through other believers,” “From sincere Muslims, Christians can learn, for example, the courage of sincere prayer. They pray five times a day, and no matter where they are -- be it the railway station or the airport -- they will do it. Whereas many Christians are ashamed of making the sign of the cross in a restaurant or pulling out a rosary on a train,”

Following the footsteps of his predecessor in Milan, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, Tettamanzi has urged Catholics to “go to the houses of Muslims” during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

“For a true dialogue, one must share their innermost convictions,” he said.

It would be sad if the next Pope is loudly hailed as an Islamic appeaser. That would trivialize the Pope's role of faith leader for Catholics and define the papacy as a political rather than a spiritual force. Anti-American alignment seems to be the papal flavor de jure lately and the papacy needs to preach more democratic choice. Cardinal Arinze seems out of touch, claiming that there is no clash of cultures and that Christians can learn the courage of sincere prayer from Muslims. All religious leaders need to wake up and realize that the greatest evil is that of superiority that makes piety irrelevant.

AN appeaser would spell disaster for Western Civilization.

People need to realize that in the next few decades, the conflict might very well be for all the marbles.

A Pope that is an Islamic appeaser would become - irrelevant. That's one way to empty out the churches completely.

What? IslamOnline claims that Islam will play a key role in deciding this papal election?

I'm shocked!

No - the key issues for the Church remain evangelization and the need for a reevangelization of a Europe which has fallen away from Christianity.

Sad? It would be disasterous. Islam is clearly an enemy of Christianity and other moralist religions of the free world. In fact, Islam is the enemy of everything that is NOT ISLAM. Religous war an eventuality? Not at all, in fact the U.S. is in one now, and might get even bigger before Islamic madmen learn to leave the Western and Christian worlds alone and go off somewhere to practice their twisted cultism.

If the Vatican is going to paste a "KICK ME" sign in dealing with Islam, Islam will do it with glee. It spells disaster for the Church.

“For a true dialogue, one must share their innermost convictions,” like 'and Muhammed is His Prophet'? And Issa was just a prophet? Those convictions? No can do.

How about if the next pope just delegates this relationship to someone along the lines of Charles Martel?

No it will not, Muslims do not intergrate, they dominate. I will be respectful too the Catholics on FR, but logically, we do not need anymore appeasers in any position of authority.

"Intergration with Muslims" puhlease.

This is true...I do respect Muslims who are able to do this unabashedly...good ones tho, not the bad ones!

And further more without going postal, it's politically correct crap like this, that makes me want too break out in a "Rush style rant" about being sick of phonies, and people that are in this for the game of it all. Islam is not here too build bridges but to be the only religion, according too CAIR. Why is it the Muslims always tell us, "We're going too pop a cap in ya' head?", and we keep screaming "TOLERANCE"!!!! What happened too America? Are we sheep for the slaughter??????? No more from me, I like being on FR.

The RCC has stated that one does NOT have to be a believer in Christ to escape eternal damnation..

Good Muslims (which would be apostate Muslims), good Buddists, good hindus, good wicaans, good snake worshipers, good American Indian shaman followers, good Marxiss, good Jews, etc
can get into Heaven..because of their good works..

They will get into Purgatory first whereby through 'their' suffering they will 'earn' salvation...and then can choose to follow or believe in Christ from there and get into Heaven

It is the Evangelical Protestant doctrine of 'Grace Alone' that is an 'anathema'. (a curse be upon their head)

Council of Trent, Chapters 7-8, Canon 9: "If anyone says that a sinner is justified by faith alone, meaning that nothing else is required to cooperate in order to obtain the grace of justification...let him be anathema." Canon 11: "If anyone says that men are justified either by the sole imputation of the justice of Christ or by the sole remission of sins, to the exclusion of the grace and charity which is poured forth in their hearts by the Holy Ghost, and remains in them, or also that the grace by which we are justified is only the good will of God, let him be anathema." Canon 24: "If anyone says that the justice received is not preserved and also not increased before God through good works, but that those works are merely fruits and signs of justification obtained, but not the cause of the increase, let him be anathema."

no offense intended but what was said..was said

Would it have been a good thing if John Paul II had tried to appease the rulers in Warsaw and Moscow?

Of course not!

The challenge now is islam, and appeasement would be as dangerous this time as it was in the W's.

I thought only 117 would be involved in the election process.

Don't allow yourselves to be ensnared by what mere men say!
You must weigh what they say against the infallible word of God (the Bible). And, if it does not square with the Bible, do not follow their counsel! If God didn't say it, it just ain't so! The Bible contains your operating instructions for life. You gotta get way past reliance on mortal man!
