You are paying for the legend and a one of a kind bike. Buy a rice burner.

They're actually very reliable - have been since getting the company back from AMF. Harley, aside from building quality bikes - in America, are part of the spirit of America. From an idea to an icon. During WWII, Harley devoted its entire production to the war effort. So to me, straddling a Hog is embracing everything great about this nation. Ride what you will, but riding a Harley is riding American Pride. And yes, I will have a piece of Apple Pie too.

Other than the fact they go slow, handle badly, break a lot, and cost too much, Harleys are great bikes. Stated more analytically, Harleys have always struck me as being more about the sizzle than the steak. If you want something that goes fast and handles well, a lot of rice grinders better fit the bill. Same with touring bikes, on/off road hybrids, and so on. If the sizzle is what you are into, Harley is a great way to go. Utility is my grail so I'll pass 'em by. I think the bike is more about fashion than function and so will have to change as fashions do.

That's what I keep hearing from new HD owners and a few of them have gone straight to BMW.

All motorcycles are reliable these days. Very little difference from bike to bike with the exception of the Goldwing. The wing alone has an exceptional duty cycle that dwarfs the rest of the crowd.
