Horse First, Wedding Second in Queen's Toast

WINDSOR, England (AP) - First the horse race results, then the wedding. Queen Elizabeth II reportedly took it in that order Saturday as she toasted the marriage of her son and heir, Prince Charles, to the former Camilla Parker Bowles.

The queen is a keen horse breeder and racing fan. She, like all of Britain, was keenly aware that the $1.32 million Grand National steeplechase, one of the biggest races on Britain's equine calendar, had been pushed back 25 minutes Saturday to avoid a TV coverage conflict with the prince's wedding, which had been postponed a day so he could attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II in Rome.

According to British comedian Stephen Fry, who was one of 800 guests at the wedding reception, the queen said:

"I've got two things to announce to you of the greatest importance.

"The first is that the Grand National was won by Hedgehunter. The second is to say to you that despite Becher's Brook and The Chair (two obstacles on the Aintree race course) and all kinds of other terrible obstacles, my son has come through and I'm very proud and wish them well."

Buckingham Palace would not confirm exactly what the queen said, but said her comments were along that line.

After the brief reception at Windsor Castle, the newly married couple left for their honeymoon in Scotland, where they will stay at a cozy hunting lodge that belonged to the prince's grandmother.

Horse first?

And just how do we know she wasn't talking about the bride?

Oh I don't know that'd be so bad. but Mom probably didn't crack open her piggy bank quite as wide for Charlie this time.

nah. I go to an E. Covenant church now but, Rick Warren's teachings are corrupting it (well...not that it wasn't already corrupted and we got baited and switched when we joined).

I was raised LCA, then AFLC.

Actually I believe this story. I believe the Queen thinks more of a horse race than her son. She has always slighted Charles. I dont think the Queen knows what love is, she has always had her ass kissed , and her kids raised by someone else. I think she is a pathetic example of a mother. Obviously she does not feel Charles should ever be King , Either that or she thinks she cant be replaced.I think she has way too high a perception of her own worth. She should have been at the wedding if she loved her son,. Just another example of her slights and arrogance. To me she sucks.
