Victor Davis Hanson's new book MEXIFORNIA A State of Becoming;
Massive illegal immigration from Mexico into California," Victor Davis Hanson writes, "coupled with a loss of confidence in the old melting pot model of transforming newcomers into Americans, is changing the very nature of state. Yet we Californians have been inadequate in meeting this challenge, both failing to control our borders with Mexico and to integrate the new alien population into our mainstream."
Noted for his military histories and especially his social commentary of post-9/11 American life, Hanson is a fifth-generation Californian who teaches college classics courses and runs a family farm. Mexifornia is part history, part political analysis, and part memoir. It is an intensely personal book about what has changed in the California over the last quarter century, and how the real losers in the chaos caused by hemorrhaging borders are the Mexican immigrants themselves. A large part of the problem, Hanson believes, comes from the opportunistic coalition that stymies immigration reform and, even worse, stifles an honest discussion of the growing problem.
Israel's Fence.. Is an Absolute Necessity
[ Goto page: 1, 2 ]-- If the Latinos want to get in to the USA they need to apply like every other human on earth. They think they are "special"? and don't need to follow rules and decorum? This in turn leads to an influx of people that do not respect the laws of the country they are virtually invading.
This is not a healthy situation and Mexico should be the first one to offer to help pay for one if it was a good neighbour.

Not Invited To The Party
Last night the White House announced a breakthrough on immigration reform, and members of both political parties hailed the President's leadership on breaking the legislative impasse in the Senate. Harry Reid told the press that the meeting had "made great progress" and that "I'm not in the habit of patting the president on the back and sending him accolades, but I have to say that this meeting that we just had, I have to pat the president on the back." However, in the rush to achieve consensus on the plan for so-called earned citizenship, it looks like a few Senators didn't get their dinner invitations:
Another issue that apparently doesn't exist is border security. While everyone at this meeting kept their concern focused on people who entered the country illegally, none of them addressed the issue of ensuring that the illegals entries get stopped. Instead, the words "Hagel-Martinez" slid off of the lips of attendees as smoothly as one might say "Simpson-Mazzoli".
The Bush administration is about to go squishy on a national-security issue, and unlike the overblown Dubai ports deal, this one actually has real security implications for the US.Comments (32)

FROM HERE ON OUT, THE AMNESTY PROGRAM IS A REPUBLICAN ISSUE
No use blaming the Democrats when the backlash comes against this ill-conceived, ill advised Administration guest worker program. Whatever credit Bush is going to get from his corporate supporters and the US Chamber of Commerce will be lost in an avalanche of criticism from the center-right.
In short, Republicans who vote for this mess are going to be put on notice: Make sure you have something lined up in the way of another job after November: Comments & Trackbacks (5)

Trouble With the Base. Lots of Trouble.
One of my best and oldest friends, one of the smartest guys I know and a lifelong conservative--which makes him smarter than me!--copied me on an email he sent to RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman this morning. I'm reproducing it in full, with his permission, because I think it conveys as well as anything I've seen the depth of the anger, frustration and sense of betrayal that many dyed-in-the-wool Republicans feel over the illegal immigration issue. Here it is: Ken, I hope you saw the Rasmussen poll...

....not too good for the team...40% support FORCIBLE deportation of illegal immigrants...a decent third party candidate in '08 and you guys are TOAST....of course, it cuts against the Dems, too...but do you really want to risk it, Ken?

From Pakistan to Guantanamo Bay, Via Mexico
The best piece of original reporting on the web today is by Blog of the Week Thomas Joscelyn: "Guantanamo Detainee Caught At The Border." Tom has put together reporting and documents that are in the public record, along with thousands of pages of transcribed Guantanamo Bay hearing testimony that were released in March, to assemble a fascinating story about one of the detainees, a Pakistani, who set out from Pakistan to come to America, and, chillingly, almost made it. It's remarkable, in a sense, that this individual was caught at the southern border. So many are not. In our immigration poll, a plurality of our readers, 45%, said that America's number one priority should be "Strengthening control of our borders to prevent possible terrorists and criminals from entering illegally."

Meanwhile, South of the Border...
With everything else going on, it's hard to pay attention to Latin America, where recent developments are generally ominous, with leftist candidates doing well in elections across much of South America. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, Cuba's Fidel Castro and Bolivia's Evo Morales have signed a triple alliance among the three far-left leaders that is designed to counter American influence in the region. One of the many unfortunate consequences of the current oil shortage is that Chavez may use his country's swollen oil revenues to prop up Castro, thereby extending the old tyrant's seemingly endless reign.
Chavez, meanwhile, has been trying to bully Peruvians

Post your coverage of the Criminal Immigrant Marches here!http://hotair.com/archives/top-picks/2006/05/01/may-day-el-gran-boicot/
May Day: El Gran Boicot
Its moonbat Christmas, the perfect day for millions of illegals to take to the streets, bring their best friend American business to its knees, and do their level best to alienate most of the rest of us. Unsurprisingly, the Times and WaPo both report a split among immigration advocates over the wisdom of staging a boycott while legislation is pending in Congress not to mention doing it on May Day. PJM notes, importantly, that some Latino groups want no part of this, but in L.A. alone the police are preparing for 500,000 marchers. Its highly unpredictable whats going to happen, The boycott is on today in Mexico, too. Nothing gringo on May 1st runs the slogan; Mexican lawmakers weigh the pros and cons and give it a thumbs up. Turns out the jokes on them, though:
In the meantime, check out this sampler of Marxist bottom-feeders looking to exploit illegal immigrants for their own ends, as well as their fellow travelers, NoHR4437 and 1Mayo. Note the fliers, too.
Update 2:21 a.m.: New poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal shows most Americans are willing to cut illegals a break. And then you come to this:
Stay tuned

FRONTPAGE MAGAZINE.com: "UNO DE MAYO" by Lowell Ponte (May 1, 2006) (Read More...)--
The most vocal of these radicals, who also set last months nationwide pro-amnesty immigration protests that blocked Los Angeles streets with half a million Mexican flag-waving marchers, are activists with International ANSWER, a front group for the avowedly Marxist Workers World Party. May Day was chosen for this mass demonstration as a conscious nod to the class confrontation traditions of this day, wrote the Socialist Worker. This journal proudly describes itself as standing in the tradition in the Marxist tradition, founded by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, and continued by V.I. Lenin, Rosa Luxemburg and Leon Trotsky.
Take it with a grain of salt. Somebody is looking to stir up some violence on May 1, one way or the other.

We are a nation of immigrants. We are not a nation of criminals. That is not our doctrine. Rule of law - that's our doctrine. This flagrant abuse of our laws must stop. We went from Voyage of the Damned to this? Uh uh.
Me? I think we ought to open up immigration - Why not everybody? Mexico being rewarded for proximity is an enormous mistake. Any Atlas readers in the ground with observations, please email me.
Pajama Media will have updated coverage all day.
