Because in days of 50% infant mortality, one wasn't enough. Ideally, a king needed "an heir and a spare." Plus, Edward was sickly from the go.
Everything Henry did, he did because he believed it was God's will that he do, or that God was directing him.
He was aware of that, as am I. (I think I mentioned that Catherine had been married to Arthur before Arthur died. If I omitted that, apologies.)
He was also aware of the contradictions in Genesis (marry your brother's widow), Leviticus (don't lay a hand on your brother's widow), Deuteronomy (you'd better marry your brother's widow), and Mark and Luke (you fool, why did you marry your brother's widow?).
Sounds like Osama.
Nam Vet
Also sounds a lot like Jesus, so I think we can stop with the stupid comparisons.
If you want to Henry-bash, go ahead, but be warned: you're subjecting yourself to stultifyingly boring dissertations about said monarch. (This area is my specialty.)
You are very welcome! (I hope I'm correct. I've been wrong before.)
Alfred E. Newman!
You know the subject better than me.
Oh, he had divinity students in France, Germany, Italy, and England all arguing those scriptures. For a time, it replaced the popular pastime of trying to figure out how many angels could dance on the head of a pin.
You have a bunch of information down, but your analysis ranks right in there with DU-think.
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
How was it in the beginning?
God puts man & woman together. Does he do it through some kind of ceremony? How does God do it? Is it a result or is it a process? Is it instantanious upon taking marriage vows in a church? What can be or not be in the hearts of the man and / or the woman that can prevent it from happening?
In the teaching, the sin was more about the why than it was about the what. Sins can not be forgiven if one does not repent. Hardness of heart is the sin, as it got/get's in the way of marriage, as marriage is meant to be.
IMO, the greater failure of the American Catholic Church comes on the front end of things, before the marriages are made.
What does my analysis lack?
Or is it perhaps that you don't have as many facts about the issue as you'd be comfortable with, so you can't tell if I'm truthful or not?
This is a prayer that all Anglican have said for centuries, since all Christians acknowledge their fallen state.
Hey, look, I'm genuinely sorry your marriage didn't work out.
At the risk of being banished from the forum, I will just say that you are a NUMBSKULL! You started out arguing that Henry VIII was "devout," and then you presented a list of facts indicating that he was an ill-tempered womanizer. Challenged, you responded that he did what he felt God wanted. Challenged further, you compared him to Christ. At that point, I said you belonged with the DU crowd. Now, I am wondering if even they would want you.
Well, having sex with someone, who, if her IQ were two points lower, would require her to be watered twice weekly, must fall somewhere around "beastiality".
Can someone believe oneself devout and not act that way?
If so, then I'm correct that Henry considered himself devout. (His writings would support this thesis.)
Can someone believe that his actions are what God wants?
If so, then I'm correct that Henry considered his actions correct. (Some of his contemporaries' writings would support this thesis. Others would undercut it, which I'm intellectually honest enough to note.)
Can anyone be compared to more than one person?
If so, then there's no harm and no foul in an analogy. Unless your faith is THAT shaky.
I'm leaving this thread now. You're no fun to play with, and your ignorance of the subject (and therefore of the basis of my arguments) is leading you into the ludicrous.
I was wondering that myself. Seems like I never hear her name mentioned without someone lobbing some cheap insult about her appearance. I don't understand what makes some people feel the need to do this. I guess it makes them feel better about themselves.
