In all fairness, pets in general are not "useful" in any kind of utilitarian sense.

My dog is useful in that he lets me know how easy it is to be happy with nothing much. Something to eat, some shelter, a soft bed and someone to toss his tennis ball for him.

It is more then obvious you have not seen the reports on how dogs, when brought to nursing homes have been known to be responsible for various therapeutic effects.
