Border Threat made on Arizona's Minutemen
KFYI Talk Radio Phoenix Arizona

Posted on 04/04/2005 9:00:20 PM PDT by Beowulf9

Word tonight from on a local radio station in Phoenix Az, KFYI, by investigator Steven Gregory is that there is a threat of attack to the Minutemen. A letter was delivered to the Minutemen from a Mexican gang calling themselves MS 13.

The letter stated that there will be a group of illegal aliens crossing the border tonight with an attempt to rush and attack the Minutemen. The plan is to create a diversion while another group crosses the border.

There is a no contact policy for the Minutemen and retired law enforcement on hand for security. Those who wish to bring guns are allowed to do so under the constitution excepting long arm rifles.

One of the Minutemen was interviewed on KFYI tonight by Joe Crummy. Stating he was given a gun to protect himself and that the men are standing by awaiting possible confrontation on the border.

It is not known if the letter is a hoax or a true concern for safety to the Minutemen.

Although article is not listed yet the source I will give the site of the radio station for future references.

Should the Minuteman volunteers see someone who appears to be an undocumented immigrant, they have been told to report the sighting to the authorities and stand aside while they do their work. "You will offer your assistance and become force-multipliers to assist their monumental task of turning back the tidal wave of people entering our country illegally," reads the project's website.

"If challenged, you will physically remove yourself from the situation ... The idea is for your firearm to remain holstered ... Why risk going to jail and ruining the mission by engaging a group of illegals? The time for that is not yet upon us. Remember, this is activism, yet it is symbolic at best. We know millions of illegals are here, thousands continue to come and nothing short of military intervention will cease the flow."

Some critics are concerned that despite the advice to remain within the law, elements attracted by the rhetoric could easily create mayhem. The Aryan Nation group has described the project as a "white pride event" and left leaflets in letterboxes in Douglas, a predominantly Latino town on the US side of the border.

The Los Angeles-based Latino gang MS-13 has reportedly instructed its members to travel to Tombstone to teach the Minutemen a lesson. The former silver-mining town, the setting for the gunfight at the OK Corral in 1881, is a fitting location.

But the potential for violence seems to have diminished in recent days as the Minuteman Project has sought to describe itself as a political protest, aiming to highlight the inadequacies of federal immigration policies.

"We certainly do appreciate any support from any group of citizens, and we share their frustration at the federal government's inaction," Mr Bonner says.

"But we do have concerns about what they are proposing to do. It's a political protest about the government not meeting its responsibilities: could they do it in a safer environment? Absolutely."

Robin Hoover, the president of Humane Borders, a group that leaves water for immigrants trekking across the Arizona desert, says the potential for violence lies elsewhere.

"I can just imagine some guys on day four or five, and they're having their tailgate parties and drinking some beer, and along come some drug mules.

"These people are armed, and don't take kindly to having their business interrupted.

"I can certainly understand people wanting to bring attention to the border, because it's broken. But only the federal government can fix it. The circumstances of this are just a chemistry for confusion and possibly death."

Others are concerned that the Minutemen will turn into what their critics already call them: vigilantes. Chris Simcox, an organiser of the group and the editor of the Tombstone Tumbleweed, was convicted on a federal weapons charge last year, and some point to the illegal detention of immigrants by US citizens in the area.

But while allegations of abuse of immigrants abound, there have been no prosecutions. The immigrants, say law enforcement officials, refuse to press charges.

Whether the Minuteman Project lives up to the hype remains to be seen. A month is a long time to sit in the desert. But it might succeed in highlighting the country's dysfunctional immigration policies and bringing pressure to bear on the Bush administration.

I should add that you are allowed to carry any legally owned firearm you choose. But there are rules governing where you may carry and possession within an automobile, and of course the interpretation of "brandishing".

If there are questions, the best bet is to check with the state of Arizona.

The ACLU like all scavengers will not put themselves into a position to be harmed, same for the Coyotes.

"But tensions between Mexico and the United States are not limited to the border. During the Mexico vs. United States soccer game last Sunday, Mexicans chanted "Osama" and booed during the U.S. national anthem. This anti-American sentiment has distanced our countries, and part of it could be because of the crackdown on Mexican immigration to the United States."

That should read crackdown on ILLEGAL immigration to the United States. We don't care where you're coming from. Mexicans must think like very young children if they hate the US for wanting to control who comes here.

As I read it, you cannot open carry or conceal carry in a place in AZ that serves alcohol. As I understand it, someone in the State Legislature is trying to get that changed so you can do both in a place that serves alcohol.

The AZ House just passed a bill that WOULD allow you to carry in a bar. However, noone expects that Senate to pass and certainly our leftist governor will never sign it into law.

Steven Gregory is a reporter for KFYI and is the only Valley Reporter embedded with the Minuteman Project along the US/Mexico border. As for the Minutemen, they are more or less a 'Block Watch' and not a vigilante group. They simply watch for illegals crossing and report them to the authorities. This is an excerpt from Steven Gregory's daily accounting (from the KFYI website).

"A camera crew is interviewing the men (I find out they're from CMT - Country Music Television)....when we pull up, I get a thumbs up from the guys...they're fans of KFYI. One of the men is Sean Pearce (Russell Pearce's son)...he says he believes in the cause and something has to be done now to protect our borders...I asked how his recovery was going...he said he was almost ready for full duty at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department....

side note: (Sean, and his partner, were shot a few months ago while serving a warrant in the East Valley....Sean was hit in the abdomen, his partner in his side....it was presumed the shooter was an illegal alien)....."

I live in Phoenix, and I can't tell you how many gangs here brandish guns and kill innocent people with them, the story is on the news all the time. The town is infested with illegals who are dangerous. Twenty years ago Phoenix was a much safer place to live.

I feel the idea of having a group like the Minutemen doing a blockwatch on our borders is not only heroic, it is essential to the safety of the United States.

Long guns are not prohibited in AZ, but are by the MM project because (I believe) it demonstrates an intent to promote violence, while hand guns are primarily considered a last resort personal protection.

That's what I loved about AZ. No Permit needed (which is the conversion of a right to a priviledge) I open carried all the time for the 12 years I lived there, never had a problem except for the apartment manager that did everything she could to get me evicted because she didn't like guns...

Well, certainly they should have left the retirees out in the field under this threat instead of gathering them together, establishing a perimeter, and developing a strategy against the potential attack.

What happens when some young punk 13 year old MS-13 confronts a Minuteman who is probably in his autumn years?

If he shoots the kid; films will be rolling and the whole scene will be shown around the world of violence on the borders in the US..US Vigilante Kills Poor Immigrant Child Looking For a Better Life In America.

Those illegals will just find another opening to come across. The Minutemen will be used for the benefit of those promoting them as only gun toting vigilantes, And also..when those spout we need the Guard on the borders. Who is going to join the guard to sit on the borders playing cards all day..where will all these guardsmen come from? Man the borders they say!

The Minutemen have already tripped the security wires that warn of illegals crossing. The Minutemen are just there to send a message to whom? This won't scare off illegals wanting to come in. And we have heard ongoing reports of millions of illegals crossing...we are fully aware. What is their point? As one reporter wrote perhaps you stand outside the companies that hire illegals, the Hollywood homes that hire illegals, the landscaper and the builder who hires illegals. No one will do that or they would have already.

Frustrating situation. I have conflicting opinions on this subject. The Minutemen, no matter how committed they are to solving and drawing attention to this problem, will not be of much value standing on the border for a month. Someone will test them and if the SkinHeads are also promoting this call to action this might turn the outcome into a negative.Perhaps it will remain as nothing more than a "tail gate" party.
