A poem I wrote back in Feb., when I originally heard the news. Posted originally at http://www.matthewmaynard.net/dailies/20050203.shtml

The Star-Spangled Necklace

This Honor from many is reserved for a few
who give to their brothers their succor.
Their valor shines forth, their enemies are subdued,
in combat they shirk off the horrors.

A necklace of blue, thirteen stars in a field,
at the sight a general might yield.
Athena with helm upon a wreathed star,
oft posthumous, the sign of great valor.

Paul Smith is a hero, genuine and rare
"I'll go first!" was his cry in battle.
His deed unexpected, he challenged and dared.
The enemy learned 'twas not prattle.

He sacrificed his life for his brothers in war
to spare them from death's ugly scar.
So we shall present to this enemy of terror
a Star-Spangled Necklace for valor.
